PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Women’s Basketball) – or the first time in nearly four years, a Shawnee State women’s basketball player has been named the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, as Ali Zieverink (SR/West Chester, Ohio) earned the distinction, the national office announced Tuesday evening.

On the week, Zieverink averaged 20.3 points per contest to go along with 10 rebounds in three victories for the No. 7-ranked Bears. Perhaps most impressive was her 73.5 shooting percentage from the field, as the senior forward connected on 25-of-34 attempts from the field.

Zieverink led the Bears to a pair of victories this week against No. 14 University of Pikeville, going for her fifth double-double in a 70-64 victory on Monday with 22 points and 16 rebounds. She closed the week on Saturday with 22 points and eight rebounds, as SSU walked away with a 93-75 win against UPike at Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium. In between, she added a 17 point, six rebound performance in a 59-56 road victory over the University of the Cumberlands.

The award comes on the heels of Zieverink’s selection as the Mid-South Conference Player of the Week, the fourth time she has received that distinction this season.

The West Chester, Ohio native becomes the first SSU player to earn the weekly national award since Schera Sampson took home the honor on Feb. 21, 2012.

Zieverink and the women’s basketball team return to action on Thursday versus Cumberland University. Tip-off from the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center in Lebanon, Tenn., is set for 6 p.m.
