WURTLAND, Ky. — Greenup County Soil and Water Conservation District of Greenup County, Ky. is gearing up to host a Forestry Workshop.
The event will be held Feb. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Greenup County Extension Office in 35, Wurtland Ave. in Wurtland, Ky.
Multiple agencies are involved in the Forestry event, including Kentucky Division of Forestry, FFA, Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Greenup County Extension Office, UK Forestry Extension, Greenup County Conservation District, and Kentucky Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
Sherri McCarty, district administrative secretary, said the idea to host the Forestry Workshop came from a Conservation District board member.
“Multiple agencies are involved. It is actually a vision of one of our board members, Rodney Bruce who attended a three-day workshop and got really excited about bringing something back home to help other land owners in our area,” McCarty said. “So with this event we have a lot of agencies coming together.”
The Conservation District’s first workshop up this time, according to McCarty. They desired to delve into other areas that may interest the public.
“This will be our first attempt at this kind of event for the Conservation itself, we have put on events for children, and things like that,” she said. “The Extension Office on the other hand has offered other forestry types of events. We’ve had forestry type of event at the Extension Office before, we are just trying to add other items to dry to draw in a crowd,”
The free sessions for the Forestry Workshop will include:

- Timber Sale Process
- Wildlife Habitat Practices

- Maple Syrup
- Ginseng
- Local Wood Industries— Glatfelter, Graf Brothers, Ohio Valley Chipping
A free dinner will be provided for workshop attendees which will be prepared by the Greenup County FFA, by calling 606-473-3228 by Feb. 9, to register for this event.
The hope is that the dispensing of knowledge and expertise shared in the workshop will inspire attendees to further pursue the information for their own personal use.
“We are hoping that the information to be presented such as the mushrooms and honey, and the maple syrup will interest folks that might be thinking about some of these hobbies, and will want to look further into it,” she said.
