“MLK, one of his famous quotes was, ‘Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?’”

Justin McMillan, one of the organizers of the MLK Day of Service, said as he helped set up the assembling area for volunteers on the campus of Shawnee State University Monday.

“This is our day where the campus of Shawnee State — students, faculty, staff and administration — give back to the community,” McMillan, a Saginaw, Michigan native, said. “This is the day where we bring the students in and we’re doing things for others in our community.”

Students, who were on break because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. national day of remembrance, still braved the frigid temperatures and returned to their campus to perform community service.

“I’m here because I want to give back to the community, because I feel like I want to follow my fellow students’ example because this is my first year in college,” Ian Carver, of Lakeland, Florida, said. “I just want to give back.”

Joining Carver in the endeavor to give back was Crystal Lawler.

“This is just to give back to the community,” Lawler said. “I’m a senior here and this is my third time for doing this. We don’t have classes. We don’t have anything to do so let’s give back to the community all we can.”

Tables were lined with items to be packaged and material for making blankets lined the aisles of the Sodexo Ballroom West.

“We have over 60 different student organizations that will be coming in and what we will actually be doing today is making blankets, scarves, putting together toiletry kits for different shelters within our community,” McMillan said.

Kaderius Fields-Love from Dayton, by way of Chicago, was at the table signing up for a project.

“I love giving back,” Fields-Love said. “I like volunteering and doing things to help other people.”
