OLBH to offer Safe Sitter classes

RUSSELL, Ky. — Bon Secours Kentucky Health System’s Healthy Community Services (HCS) will host a Safe Sitter class Saturday, Jan. 30, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Bellefonte Centre 1000 Ashland Drive on the campus of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital (OLBH).

The class takes place in Healthy Community Services’ classroom on the fourth floor of Bellefonte Centre. The cost of the class is $35 and includes a Safe Sitter backpack, training manual and lunch.

Kevin Compton BSKHS Communications and Advocacy Specialist, said

“OLBH has had a hand in training future babysitters for more than two decades. Safe Sitter teaches not only safety, but responsibility,” Compton said.

Safe Sitter prepares young adolescents ages 11 to 16 for the responsibilities of nurturing and protecting children. Safe Sitter teaches teenage babysitters how to handle crises, how to keep their charges secure, and how to nurture and guide a young child. OLBH is a registered Safe Sitter teaching site and has been providing the program at the hospital for more than 20 years.

Chris Crum, Public Health Director of Greenup Co. Health Department, said the classes are aligned with mandates for the state of Kentucky.

“The OLBH Safe Sitter classes fall in line with our state mandated child fatality review and injury prevention program. An organization that takes it upon themselves to be proactive in ensuring the safety of our young people should be praised for their efforts,” Crum said.

To register for the Safe Sitter classes, contact the OLBH CareLine at 606- 833-CARE (2273).
