Roads reopen after flooding

High water and flooding caused three routes on the southern Ohio state highway system to close down on Sunday, but all three were reopened Monday morning, according to state highway and emergency management officials.

The three state routes closed on Sunday were 73 in Scioto County, 348 in Adams County and 93 in Lawrence County, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

In Scioto County, 73 closed at Rarden due to flooding, but was reopened after water levels receded, Kim Carver with Scioto County Emergency Management said.

“Flash flooding in that area is frequent,” Carver said. “So is 348 in the Brush Creek area of Adams County.”

High water is also reported on State Route 140 at New Boston, however, the route remains open, the Ohio

Department of Transportation (DOT) reported.

High water was reported on State Route 140, near U.S. 52, in the Sciotoville area, between New Boston and Wheelersburg, officials said.

All routes on the state system in Scioto County — and elsewhere in District 9 — are open, the Ohio DOT stated, however, they did not have any information regarding county or township roads.

Over the weekend, high water was also reported on State Route 327 South in Jackson County, between State Route 32 and U.S. 35. High water was reported on State Route 353 in Brown County as well.

“Both routes are open, but motorists should use additional caution,” officials added.

On Sunday, the entire valley along Ohio Brush Creek in Adams County was flooded, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

“Long stretches of Route 348 in Tiffin and Brush Creek Townships are underwater, as well as several secondary roads in the valley,” the NWS report stated. “Water begins to cover the Route 125 Bridge east of West Union, with low sections of Route 125 already covered. Low-lying homes and businesses near West Union become flooded.”

The NWS weather forecast for Tuesday calls for a slight chance of showers before 8 a.m. with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 54. Southwest wind seven to nine miles per hour and the chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

On Tuesday night, there is a chance of rain after 4 a.m. with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 39. West wind around five miles per hour becoming calm in the evening. The chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible, according to the NWS forecast.

On Wednesday, there is a chance of rain, mainly after 8 a.m. with cloudy skies and a high near 51. Light and variable wind becoming west around six miles per hour in the afternoon. The chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch are possible, the NWS forecast predicted.

Carver said the National Weather Service’s River Forecast Center’s additional rainfall forecast for the Ohio and Scioto rivers calls for minor flooding issues in the next few days.

“The Ohio River will crest somewhere around 45 feet Thursday and the Scioto River in Piketon will crest around 23 feet Wednesday,” she said. “This can cause some minor nuisance flooding maybe at the U.S. 52 ramp at the interchange with route 235 and eastbound 73 at Second St. and route 852.”

Carver said there could also be some lowland and backwater flooding near both the Ohio and Scioto rivers.

Officials urged motorists to use caution where high water is present and the route remains open.
