Again in 2015 troopers from the Portsmouth Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP)will take needy children on a Christmas shopping spree.

This Monday, Dec. 14, at 5 p.m., troopers will accompany the children to Kmart in New Boston immediately following their shopping for shoes at Scioto Shoe Mart.

“We’ve got 27 kids and we’re going to do shoes up at Scioto Shoe Mart,” Sergeant John Howard of the OSHP said. “All of our select children will get a new pair of tennis shoes. Scioto Shoe Mart is really giving us quite a discount. Tom Selby is a personal friend of mine and he said he really wants to help.”

Howard said the children were carefully selected through area schools.

“We told the guidance counselors that we want kids who don’t have shoes and don’t have coats,” Howard said. “We want to really help somebody who needs help.”

Howard said there is a reason they chose to shop Kmart.

“Kmart was really gracious enough to give us a significant discount, so we’re going to use Kmart this year,” Howard said.

Helping with the shopping spree will be members of the Shawnee State University women’s volleyball team.

“They raised quite a bit of money for us $500 to $700. I don’t remember,” Howard said. “So we’re really looking forward to a good time.”

On Monday evening the 2015 Shop With a Cop event was held at the South Point Walmart store. The event was sponsored by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Lawrence County Adult Probation Department, Lawrence County 911/EMS, the South Point Police Department, the Proctorville Police Department, the Ironton Police Department, the Coal Grove Police Department, the Chesapeaker Police Department and members of the Lawrence County Court systems.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless said this year they were able to provide an opportunity for approximatelhy 65 children from throughout Lawrence County to have a brighter Christmas.
