Santa has agreed to volunteer his time to take photos with local pets at the Portsmouth Feed and Supply this weekend, in order to help raise money for the Animal Welfare League of Scioto County.

This is the ninth year that the collaboration has been held. Animal Welfare League Treasurer Judy Cooper says that it is a blessing to the organization, as well as the locals who take advantage of the opportunity to let their pets meet with Mr. Claus.

Cooper has been involved with the Animal Welfare League of Scioto County for over 30 years. She says that she has a passion for the work and couldn’t imagine not helping animals and their caretakers.

“There are things needed in this community that we want to help with.” Cooper said. “We get calls from all over, even from people outside the area; because not every community has an organization like the community here has with us.”

Cooper said that the work accomplished by the Animal Welfare League of Scioto County ranges from vaccinations to spay and neuters, and they even offer pet food pantries.

Portsmouth Feed and Supply will be supplying everything, from Santa to camera, to assist the Animal Welfare League.

“We are extremely appreciative of Phyllis and John Rice, of Portsmouth Feed and Supply, because they are very good to us,” Cooper said. “They started this event for us and do so much. Phyllis even took a class at Shawnee, so she could take the pictures. She said she just got a new camera for it and we are looking forward to another year”

A photo package is available for $14. The package include two of the following options, one 8X10, one 4X6, or one sheet of wallets. Photos may include pets with, or without, their caretakers.

“Yes, Pet Photos with Santa is a fundraiser, but we also believe in doing things for the community, too,” Cooper said. “We’ve been getting many calls about it and we are looking forward to providing the opportunity.”

Santa Claus also said he looks forward to greeting locals and their pets.

“Oh, we always get so many furry faces to take pictures with, some even bring their pets,” Santa joked.

“We always look forward to meeting and greeting the children, but also their friends with paws and claws. We also love helping out the folks of the Animal Welfare League, who always make the good list, with their constant endeavors to give back to the community,” Santa said.

Pet Photos with Santa will be held on Saturday, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., at Portsmouth Feed and Supply, 240 Second Street, Portsmouth. Pets are encouraged to bring their Christmas lists, but asked to please keep them PG and to refrain from including catnip.
