WAVERLY – The Waverly Lady Tigers defeated the Portsmouth West Lady Senators Monday evening, with a final score of 63-37. Waverly picked up its win at home over Portsmouth West, in the opening night of Southern Ohio Conference (SOC) play. The Lady Tigers improve their record to 2-0 with a 1-0 conference record. After suffering the loss to Waverly, West’s record moved to 0-1, as this was the Lady Senators season opener.

Waverly defeated Zane Trace Saturday, 49-40, on the road.

The Lady Tigers were led on offense by Morgan Wiseman, who finished the evening with 19 points. Most of her points came by way of the three pointer. Of her 19 points, 15 came off five three point shots. Wiseman’s remaining four points came from two field goals. She also racked up three steals and two assists.

“Morgan shot the ball extremely well again tonight and is becoming more comfortable with her role on our team,” Waverly Head Coach John Bonifield said. “Overall, I very pleased with our performance and the way we played as a team tonight.”

Laken Smith finished the evening with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists for Waverly. Smith was also perfect from the free throw line.

Brittany Green came up big for the Lady Tigers on defense, snatching up 10 rebounds, and four steals. She also had two assists to finish the night.

“We tried to set the tempo early and Rose helped us do that,” Bonifield said. “She was all over the court and played with tremendous energy.”

Rose Remington played well throughout the evening on both offense and defense. She scored five points, brought down six rebounds, stole the ball five times, and dished out five assists.

The Portsmouth West Lady Senators were led by Haleigh Pollard. Pollard hit two three pointers, two field goals, and also went a perfect two for two from the free throw line.

Waverly controlled the game from the first quarter all the way through. At halftime, Waverly led West by twelve points. That lead had dipped to 10 by the end of the third quarter, but then the Lady Tigers went on a scoring spree in the fourth quarter, scoring 22 points in that quarter alone.

The Lady Senators simply got overwhelmed by the Lady Tigers defense. West was only able to score six points in the fourth quarter, allowing the game to be taken out of reach.

West will next take the court against Valley on Monday, November 30th, at Valley.

Waverly will travel to Oak Hill on Monday to face the Lady Oaks.
