MINFORD – The South Webster Jeeps came out of Minford with a win, defeating the Falcons by a score of 53-33. Rebounding and defensive tenacity were keys to the game for the Jeeps, as they managed to crash the boards and limit Erin Daniels to just five points on the night.

The Jeeps jumped out to an early first quarter lead, going up 17-8 at the end of one. It was apparent from the start that the Jeeps size bothered the Falcons in the paint, limiting their drives and forcing them to take mid-range shots. Elli Jo Johnson was a defensive presence for Webster, adding 10 rebounds to her 14 points. Kimber Johnson had 9 rebounds and 8 points as well.

Kacie Hall poured in 16 points and was assigned to guard Erin Daniels much of the night. Hall kept Daniels in check, keeping her off balance and shooting from the arc when she managed to get the ball in her hands. Daniels scored just five points. Abby Grasso lead the Falcons with 11.

“Our girls played extremely tough. Our defense was good, but they came down and made shots and we didn’t,” explained Minford Head Coach Scott Caudill. “They managed to make runs and hold on to them. I’m very proud of the girls. I know what we have to work on, we just have to pick our heads up and get ready for Northwest and Wheelersburg coming up.”

“Those kids have played together for a long time. They are a very well coached club. They know how to play together and we are still learning a new system. Kacie Hall is just a tremendous player. For us, Erin Daniels is the same way. Players have those nights sometimes, it’s just basketball. The next time they face off I’ve got full confidence the tables could turn our way.”

South Webster out rebounded the falcons 31-23, and went on a run in the fourth quarter to push their lead to 20.

“We knew coming in they were a great team,” said South Webster Head Coach Kristen Johnson. “They are quick, but they are also young. We knew we had to contain Erin Daniels. We knew that they wanted to penetrate on us and we had to try to limit that. I’m proud of our girls. Kacie Hall was not only our leading scorer but she was working double duty defending their best player. Elli Jo is just so versatile, she can handle in the guard spot or take care of stuff inside.”

“We had a tough game last time out against Eastern Brown. But I’m so proud of the way they came out and played hard. The next game is a big game, too. We face Wheelersburg at home and they are going to be a very good presence in the SOC. We have to walk out of this game and not be satisfied. We still have to work and get better.”

Next Monday, South Webster hosts the Wheelersburg Pirates and Minford travels to Northwest High School to face off against the Mohawks. Both games tip off at 6:00 P.M.
