On Wednesday morning East Community Schools held an all district assembly to hear from and honor area veterans for their service.

One of the keynote speakers for the assembly was East Graduate Lt. Colonel Kevin Price.

Price spoke to the assembly about achieving goals and dreams.

Over the course of his presentation Price showed a video of him flying an F-16 plane. The video showed the perspective of the pilot, himself.

Price said growing up he wanted to be an astronaut.

“I always wanted to be an astronaut and I have not gotten there, yet. I’ve got some plans and who knows maybe someday,” Price said. “Growing up wanting to be an astronaut developed an intense interest in flying and aerospace.”

Price shared with those in attendance about how he’s been able to accomplish goals and objectives in his life.

He said, “My hope is to inspire you (those in attendance) to realize, you can accomplish your dreams.”

The school had its elementary students compose thank you letters to veterans. A number of students were chosen to read their letters to those in attendance. The letters expressed the students’ gratitude to veterans and the sacrifices they went through.

In anticipation of Veterans Day the district held a canned food drive. During the assembly the district acknowledged three classes for collecting the most. Everything collected was donated to Veterans for Christmas; Living with a Cause organization. Drew Lowe; a student at East High School gave a history of Veterans Day.

“There are countries where the government dictates the number of children a family can have. There are countries where not everyone is offered an education, there are countries were the people are not protected and live in fear every day. It’s because of the men and women who fight for us, we have those freedoms,” Lowe said. “The next time you hear a singing of the national anthem and you hear the words, ‘for the land of the free and the home of the brave’, please thank a serviceman (or woman) of the past, who fought for our freedom and who have made it possible for our country to be what it is today.”
