Portsmouth- The Northwest Mohawks breathed a sigh of relief Saturday night as they managed to win by the narrow victory of 31-23 over the Notre Dame Titans.

The Mohawks opened up the night’s game with the first two scores: both coming from running back Austin Jenkins. On both drives, Northwest managed to play their style of football putting together two long, grinding drives that left them ahead 14-0.

The Notre Dame Titans benefited from a fumble recovery deep within their own territory just as Northwest was putting together their third long drive of the night. They took the ball 74-yards back the other direction, as Sam Kayser broke an energizing 35-yard run that would give the Titans some life. The drive was finished off by fullback Michael Collins for a four yard touchdown run. The half ended with a score of 14-7.

Both teams came out ill-prepared to play the third quarter. Within the third alone, both teams lost a fumble and both Titans quarterback Drew Cassidy and Mohawk quarterback Garret Rowe threw an interception. Both teams ended the quarter with field goals, for a 17-10 score headed into the fourth quarter of action.

Opening up the fourth, the Mohawks put together another grinding 85-yard drive which looked to put the game away. Borens ran hard and often in the night’s game, scoring on the drive and ending the game with 30 rushes for 208-yards. Notre Dame did not give up, though, as Kayser returned the ensuing kickoff 85-yards for a touchdown. Notre Dame, down 17 to 24, attempted the onside kick. The kick bounced away from the grasping hands of several Mohawks players and appeared to have been recovered by Notre Dame. Unfortunately for the Titans, the officials ruled the recovery had come out of bounds.

Starting with a short field, Northwest once again marched downfield and put together another Austin Jenkins scoring drive.

With just 48 seconds left in the game, Notre Dame managed to go back downfield with a quick score just as time expired. Their valiant effort was in vain, and the final score was 31-23.

“We were definitely worried at points,” admitted Northwest Coach Brooks Fry. “Notre Dame is always well prepared. They have a lot of tradition there and they are always well prepared. We knew it was going to be a dog fight. We had mistakes out there, we put the ball on the ground and had poor kickoff coverage, but give Notre Dame all the credit in the world. They came out tonight and really played us tough. The guys up front did a good job of locking them down. Boren had a problem with his shin there for a bit, but he eventually got going and did well.”

Coach Fry and the Mohawks go to Franklin Furnace next week for a match against the Green Bobcats.

“This week we will focus on Green. It is another away game in the conference and we will worry about Symmes Valley after we take care of Green. Right now, it sounds cliché, but we are trying to take it one game at a time.”
