Do you know how much it’s really costing you? Have you ever sat down and tried to actually figure it out? October is National Energy Awareness Month, and Columbia Gas of Ohio is dedicating this week to energy efficiency.

Columbia Gas of Ohio also offers customers numerous energy efficiency programs to help reduce energy consumption and their overall utility bill.

“Customers can realize significant savings when they take advantage of these programs,” Dan Creekmur, president of Columbia Gas of Ohio, said. “And we make it easy to do. Investing a few minutes to find out about our programs could make a huge impact on customers’ household budgets.”

If you’re not sure where to start, Creekmur says Columbia Gas of Ohio now offers Home Energy Checkup, a new easy-to-use, interactive online resource for customers to learn how their home is performing and about Columbia Gas’ energy and money saving programs. The Home Energy Checkup is available at http://columbiagasohio.com/checkup.

Columbia Gas of Ohio said there are some quick fixes you can do right now, like buying, installing, and using a programmable thermostat or setting your thermostat back five degrees while you’re asleep or away from your home for eight hours or more. For each degree lower that the thermostat is set in winter, energy costs decrease by up to three percent. If you don’t yet have a programmable thermostat, you can buy one from a local hardware or home improvement store or from Columbia Gas of Ohio’s online e-store at www.columbiagasohio.com/e-store and get a $25 rebate.

Other things you can do include buying a high efficiency furnace or boiler. They use 15 percent less energy than standard models saving homeowners money on their utility bills. Rebates are available for certain models and if your home was built before 1975, schedule a home energy audit now before winter hits. An energy audit can identify ways to help you save up to 30 percent on your utility bills.
