Trojans light up Pointers

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio — The Trojans left little doubt who was in charge Friday night as a 30-point first half gave Portsmouth a 55-28 victory over South Point.

A week after stumbling at Rock Hill, which many people have described as a “bad” loss, Trojans head coach Aaron Duncan shed some light on his team’s quick turnaround.

“This week in practice, we had a great week of practice,” Duncan said. “The kids were very focused. The old saying you play like you practice, well we got exactly like we practiced last week at Rock Hill. The effort we had in practice and pregame translated to the game last Friday night. The same can be said tonight. We had a great week of practice and a great pregame, and we came out and played great as a team.”

The Trojans only needed 12 minutes to give Austin Hollins the opportunity to show his dominance as the senior scored three touchdowns in the opening quarter. Hollins scored on Portsmouth’s first drive of the game — a 28-yard reception from sophomore quarterback Cole Lowery. The two-way player also scored on South Point’s first drive, stepping in front of Pointers quarterback Brandin Jackson to intercept a pass, which he returned 34 yards to paydirt.

At the end of the first quarter, Hollins added his second offensive touchdown and third overall score of the night with a 14-yard touchdown reception.

“Austin Hollins made plays on both sides of the ball,” Duncan said. “He made plays blocking. He did what a senior is expected to do.”

The Trojans led 30-8 as the third quarter began. After the Pointers promptly went 3-and-out on the opening drive, South Point shanked a punt, which bounced around at it’s own 30-yard line. While the Pointers were content watching the ball, Omaru Carter scooped up the ball and returned it for a touchdown.

Then, on South Point’s next drive, Zach DeLotell ripped the ball away from the tailback and returned it 26 yards. Both of Portsmouth’s scores came within a minute of each other and was part of a five touchdown third quarter, which saw the running clock rule put into effect and then later canceled once South Point got within 20 points on the Trojans.

The second half was primarily played with second and third stringers for both sides, although the Trojans brought their starters back for a couple of series once South Point began to chip away at the score.

Portsmouth will look to get back to .500 next week as the Chesapeake Panthers come to town.

“We’re just really tickled to death, we needed this win and now at 3-4, we had a chance to even the mark next week,” Duncan said.
