If you see one more movie this year, make it “The Martian” — an action and emotionally packed thrill ride of a movie.

The first scene of the movie sets the tone for the rest of the movie. The opening of the film shows Matt Damon who plays Astronaut Mark Watney along with five others on Mars gathering samples and conducting experiments. In a short time, the crew is warned of an impending storm approaching. As the crew makes their way to an escape vehicle, Watney is struck by debris and is separated from the crew. After some searching they believe Watney is dead and are forced to leave the planet and everything else behind. Shortly after the crew escapes, audience is shown Watney awakening from the storm. It did not take Watney long to realize the crew had left and the closest rescue from earth was four years away. It was then Watney was faced with a critical question, does he give up or does he fight to survive. And he choose to fight.

How often in life are we faced with the same question? We may not be stranded on Mars, but circumstances make us feel we are. It would have been really easy for Watney to give up, use all of the rations and await death.

A wise man once said, “At first the river is a river and the mountain is a mountain. And then the river is no longer a river and the mountain is no longer a mountain, and then later the river is a river again and the mountain is a mountain again.”

What was a job for Watney, turned out to include a struggle for life. What was a station that supported the life of six people designed to last 31 days, turned into an area he hoped would sustain him while stranded. What was comfortable for Watney, became his support and hope to stay alive. Once Watney became stranded, what was once convenient became necessary.

If you enjoyed the movie “Gravity” or “Interstellar” you will enjoy, “The Martian.”

The movie is rated PG-13 and runs 141 minutes.
