The Inaugural Pastor’s Breakfast, sponsored by Scioto County Ministerial Association (SCMA), will convene Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 at 9 a.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 610 Fourth Street in Portsmouth. Al Oliver, former Major League Baseball player, will be the featured guest speaker.

Craig Gilliland, current SCMA president, said the purpose of the event is to give members of clergy an opportunity to be refueled and rejuvenated.

“We are hosting the Leadership Breakfast to try to meet an unmet need. A lot of times pastors and clergy, and church leaders are always giving of themselves, and in some cases do not take the time to be re-energized, or refreshed,” Gilliland said. “So the Scioto County Ministerial Association saw this as an unmet need to try to energize a population that is overlooked sometimes, that is always giving, and not receiving,”

He believes the event will be instrumental in helping pastors and clergy to serve in an even greater capacity.

“This event will provide a free breakfast to participants, and give them an opportunity to listen to a motivational speaker, that will help to sort of galvanize them a bit so that they can go out and continue to do the good deeds and the good work that they are doing in their congregations and circles of influence,” he said.

He said the timing worked extremely well to have Oliver as the guest speaker at the Inaugural Breakfast, and the character of Oliver.

“It was timely with him, (Oliver) coming out with a new book as well. It just seemed that the Lord was opening these doors, and Al was agreeable, and available, so we are fortunate to utilize a resource that we are blessed to have,” he said. “We chose Mr. Al Oliver because we are very fortunate to have such a great resource in our midst. He is a godly man, that lives a principled life, so we didn’t have to go very far to find somebody that could be our inaugural speaker.”

All Inaugural Breakfast attendees will receive a complimentary, signed copy of ‘Life is a Hit; Don’t Strike Out,’ Oliver’s latest book.

He said SCMA is really excited about the event, and are looking forward to a wonderful time of inspiration and fellowship.
