Neighborly kindness is not obsolete. When Portsmouth Kroger Store Manager Chris Gullion assisted an elderly customer home with his groceries to his home nearby, community member, Gregory Syroney noticed the act of kindness.

Syroney, president of Scioto County Storm Chasers, said he was touched by observing Gullion walking with the elderly customer, and asked if he could take a picture of them.

“As I was heading to Kentucky I saw one of the Kroger Managers Chris helping an elderly man taking his groceries to his apartment on the corner of Third Street and Chillicothe Street, across from Elite on Chillicothe Street,” Syroney said. “You don’t see too many local people doing good deeds like this in this area. It really touched me. Cause I used to help the elderly when I worked at Blackburn’s in 1992 – 1993 like this. “

Gullion, who has been employed with Kroger for 10 years, said it is customary for Kroger staff to assist customers with their groceries.

“We help customers all of the time, it is just my job to do that, and is something that everybody here does. So if it wasn’t me it would have been one of these other young men or young ladies,” Gullion said. “With this particular gentleman I said, ‘Sir, I’d be glad to help you,’ and so we started walking down the street towards the bridge. He had a lot of groceries, and just needed some help, that’s all it was.”

Gullion said he would expect everybody to lend a helping hand whenever it is needed.

“I would think that everybody would want to help their neighbor,” Gullion said. “And, just because he happened to be a customer, that didn’t matter. We all like to help our neighbor. I didn’t want any kind of recognition, but the gentleman (Syroney) asked to take the picture, but I told him that I was just here to help this gentleman. I actually thought I was helping the man to his car, but that is how he (Syroney) saw us, because we had such a long walk to the man’s home which was all the way down to the bridge.”
