WHEELERSBURG — The Pirates faced little resistance Saturday night in their quest to remain undefeated. With the aid of a running clock throughout the second half, Wheelersburg beat Cincinnati North College Hill 42-7 at Ed Miller Stadium.

With a heavyweight matchup against Jackson looming, the Pirates remained focused on the task at hand despite facing a winless opponent.

“We really focus on that (mental aspect),” Pirates head coach Rob Woodward said. “We try to never overlook the mental part of the game. With this week’s preparation, you don’t know what to expect from a Cincinnati team coming in, and they did somethings at the beginning that we weren’t really expecting. But we made some adjustments and the kids did a really good job of focusing. I thought the preparation this week was pretty good.”

Wheelersburg (4-0) was led by Kyle Davis who completed 8-of-10 passes for 163 yards. Davis also added 58 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

“Kyle I thought did another good job tonight,” Woodward said. “I thought the offensive line did a good job of communicating with each other.”

Davis and Chasen Burk were in sync throughout the evening as Burk hauled in four passes for 87 yards.

“They gave us something we hadn’t seen a whole lot in terms of simple man coverage,” Woodward said. “That posed a different challenge for us. They tried to bring some pressure. I thought our coaching staff did real well throughout the week preparing what would work.”

Defensively, the Pirates only gave up 191 total yards of offense with the first string defense pitching a shutout. The Trojan starters scored in the fourth quarter after Woodward had emptied his bench.

“Jake Darnell had a good early stick,” Woodward said. “We had a couple of over aggressive penalties early … It gave them a couple of opportunities early on but when it came down too it, we hunkered down and really did well.”

Now that Wheelersburg as hit the quarter mark of the season with an unblemished mark, the Pirates will have their toughest test Friday when they travel to Jackson.

“We’re going to enjoy this one tonight,” Woodward said. “Then our coaching staff is going to get after it. Our kids are going to get after it preparing for the next game and that happens to be Jackson.”
