MCDERMOTT — After nearly a two-year hiatus, the Mohawks were finally able to return home. Northwest fans and players were primed for a reunion. And Even though the game was delayed for more than an hour and the pre-game festivities were cancelled, Northwest (2-1) came ready for action, beating the Chillicothe-Huntington Huntsmen 48-0 on a rain-soaked field Friday night.
The Mohawks established momentum from the outset, scoring 14 points on their first two drives of the game.
“That’s exactly what we want to do every week,” Mohawks head coach Brooks Fry said. “We want to be able to control tempo, try to keep the other team’s offense off the field. We just did a good job of controlling the ball and really forced them to try to play catch up from the early going.”
Borens reached the endzone on the first two scores of the game, the first touchdown coming from 56 yards away and the second from seven yards.
Not to be outdone, Austin Jenkins scored the next three touchdowns for the Mohawks, a 49-yard run, nine-yard scamper and the last one coming from 10 yards out as the first half was coming to its conclusion.
Borens and Jenkins combined to rush for 223 yards on 20 carries and five touchdowns. As a team, Northwest rushed 47 times for 307 yards.
“Really, that offensive line is where it starts with us every week,” Fry said. “I thought those guys did a tremendous job. Huntington played that very same defense against us last year and we really struggled with it. Tonight, we moved people. The backs hit it hard. They got it down hill and they protected the ball. That was the main thing we wanted to see with weather like this.
Overall, a good team effort for us.”
Defensively, Northwest allowed 76 yards on total offense while forcing four turnovers.
“We were concerned coming in,” Fry said. “That’s not something we’ve done really well in the past is defending that type of offense. We really worked hard on it this week. We asked some guys to do somethings they don’t normally do and I thought they did a great job. I thought we did a really good job defensively holding that spread attack down.”
