The Portsmouth Rotary Club (PRC) held its 53rd annual Fish Fry on Friday on the Esplanade in Portsmouth. According to Stan Jennings, co-chairperson of PRC, the event went remarkably well.

“Everything is just going excellently. The biggest thing that I want recognize anybody for, is how the well the Rotarians pitched in, and everybody has participated, and things have ran smoothly,” Jennings said. “There have been times when the line has gone all the way down the street to the radio station. It has just turned out really well.”

He said all proceeds from the fish fry go towards scholarships.

“The main goal with this is to support the community, and to provide scholarships, and that is what this does,” he said. “So, our goal is community enrichment.”

He said they had a very diverse volunteer base, with individuals from numerous parts of the community.

“I have my culinary group here, we have the Rotarians, educators, a county commissioner, you have Rev. Heimbach over here, there are retired people, you have a judge,” he said. “Virtually, every part of the community comes in and works with us.”

The PRC Fish Fry has been a local tradition for as many years as the Portsmouth River Days Festival.

“We just worked on it, and put a good plan together, and things just turned out really well. Every River Days, we have had this fish fry, that is how long it has been going on,” he said. For every River Days we have been here. Many years ago it was a two-day event, but now we just hold it one day, which is on Friday, Labor Day weekend. This will all be torn down tonight. I just thank everyone enough for how this has turned out.”

Though tickets for the fish fry are sold in advance, walk-ups are always welcome. The 2015 PRC Fish Fry took place on the Esplanade from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.
