The Southern Hills Art Council has extended an invitation to local artists to submit work for the 34th Annual Foothills Art Festival in Jackson. The event is held within the indoor lodge at Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp.

The council is accepting artwork in many categories, including oil/acrylic, pastel/drawing, traditional photography, enhanced photography, three dimensional work, and watercolor. The exhibition isn’t juried, but is professionally judged. Artists of all ages and levels of experience are encouraged to enter. Entrants are, however, limited to four pieces per category.

There is a $10 entry fee to submit work and there is a discounted price of $36 for four submissions. If room is available, late submissions will be accepted for $12 per piece or $44 for four. The deadline for submission is Sept. 4. Forms for submission can be downloaded online at www.markayjackson.org/foothills.

There will be a total of $1,395 given away as prize money, sponsored by WesBanco and OSCO Industries Employees’ Charity Fund. A $200 prize will be awarded to Best of Show, a $100 First Place will be given to each category, a $50 Second Place will be given to each category, and $35 Third Place prizes will be given to each category.

Work can be sold at the festival, but a 20 percent commission will be withheld.

“Because this is a judged and not juried show, everyone can display their work,” Southern Hills Arts Council Executive Director Barbara Summers said. “We love the Foothills Art Festival because it is an outstanding opportunity for emerging artists to get their work out in the public.”

Local award-winning photographer Pam DeCamp has been a member of the Foothills exhibition for six years and plans on submitting work for a seventh year.

“The Foothill’s Art Festival is an excellent professional venue to have your art work displayed,” DeCamp said. “Regionally, it is the largest show available to amateur and professionals alike. My advise to aspiring artists, if they don’t feel like they are ready to make the leap into competitions, is to at least go to the show and look at the displays. This is my seventh year to participate and each year I gain inspiration on how I can make improvements in my own art.”

The festival will run Friday, Oct. 16, to Sunday, Oct. 18. The festival includes visual arts and hands-on arts activities for the whole family. Last year’s festival featured the talent of over 117 artists and 400 works of art. A preview reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. for all exhibitors, purchase award patrons, sponsors, and volunteers.

The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
