A member of the U.S. House of Representatives is coming to Portsmouth to honor the city during its bicentennial year.
“I had gotten a phone call and an email from Congressman (Brad) Wenstrup’s office,” Portsmouth City Manager Derek K. Allen said. “I believe he had seen an article about the new (city) flag and he will be here next Monday (Aug. 31) at 1:15 (p.m.) and would like to recognize our bicentennial and had requested as many people as possible from City Council would attend. They want to do a presentation at 1:30 (p.m.) here at the (municipal) building. So I’d like to see if you’re (Council) available if you would be there for that.”
Wenstrup verified on Tuesday he will be in Portsmouth on Monday, Aug. 31, to recognize the city’s bicentennial this year. He will present a Congressional Record from the U.S. House of Representatives to the city, an honor he included in the official record earlier this year.
“For 200 years, Portsmouth has stood proudly along the Ohio River, a gateway to the region and a testament to the work ethic of Southern Ohioans,” Wenstrup told the Daily Times. “I look forward to honoring the city and the people on this milestone.”
It was on March 15, 1815 that Portsmouth, laid out in 1803, officially became a city. The Bicentennial Committee has scheduled events throughout the year to honor the city’s long heritage.
