A Boneyfiddle small business recently donated funds, playing a role in the continuance of the Scioto County Animal Welfare League.
The donation came from Michael Smallwood and Doug Besco of Remember When. The store is one of many antique merchants of downtown Portsmouth and can be found at 537 Second Street.
The two have sold certain items for some time to raise the extra funds for the organization.
“I just want to help all the animals I can,” Smallwood said. “The Animal Welfare League does a lot of good work and it feels good to be a part of their continued work. Doug and I just love animals and we are glad to help.”
The two made a similar donation of $1,000 back in 2013.
The donation will be used to continue the organization’s reduced rate spay/neuter program for low and fixed income households. It will also provide cat and dog food for the local food pantry, as well as various support services to pet owners.
“When we receive a donation such as this, it goes to show that people in our community care about the welfare of animals,” Jackie Servidea, secretary of the Scioto County Animal Welfare League, said. “Donations are always appreciated and needed from individuals and businesses. It helps support our services and programs.”
The organization offers various clinics periodically throughout the year, assisting many low-income families afford pet healthcare, from annual booster shots to rabies shots, heartworm medications, reduced spay and neuter surgeries, and more
“This just allows people an opportunity to take care of their pets and ensure their health at a reduced rate,” Servidea said. “Even saving on the cost it takes to see the vet during a visit is monumental.”
