Despite the morning rain, the Scioto County Fair openend Monday with a variety of activities.

Among the booths are the Scioto County Commissioners, in building four. Over the course of the fair the commissioners and volunteers are encouraging people to register to win a microwave and 32-inch TV, to be given away at the end of the week.

“At my age, although I enjoy some of the junk food and stuff out there,” said Mike Crabtree, chairman of the Scioto County Commissioners. “There’s a certain amount of excitement that comes to the area with the start of the fair.”

Crabtree said there is a lot of hard work that goes into each aspect of the fair. He, along with commissioners Doug Coleman and Bryan Davis, will spend time in their booth greeting those that pass by.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everybody,” Davis said.

This year’s fair will be different for Davis. This time last year he was a candidate for commissioner. This year Davis said plans to enjoy the fair with family and friends. Coleman said he enjoys various parts of the fair including seeing the people and nightly entertainment.

Over the last couple of years the commissioners have been invited to judge Motocross Championship Series, grandstand entertainment for Monday. The commissioners said they are looking forward to that opportunity again this year.

In anticipation of this year’s fair, a crew from the Scioto County Engineers offices underwent a road widening on the southern end of Fairground Road.

“Intersection capacity and trying to get traffic to move is the goal. About two years ago I went through there and was going to the garage and talked to one of the state highway patrolmen and said ‘do you think it would help if we put a turn lane in here,” said Scioto County Engineer Craig Opperman. “That’s how the idea participated.”

Opperman said the next step was to find funding for the project.

“We’re planning on paving that (Fairground) road next year and knew this was the year we need to get (installation of a turn lane) it done,” Opperman said. “We put a set of plans together and our guys did most of the work.”

Once the roadway was widened the Shelly Company, paved the expansion.

“We were pushing hard to get this done before the fair,” Opperman said.

The turn lane was operational late last week. The goal of the turn lane is to keep traffic moving at peak times during the fair and other events.
