Traffic was halted in all directions for a period of time Tuesday afternoon when a truck drove through the front of the former Southern Moon Pit Barbecue on 11th Street in Portsmouth.

At the scene, the driver, Elwood Meadows, told the Daily Times his truck was struck by a car and spun into the structure. The driver of the car was not immediately identified by authorities at the scene.

Portsmouth Police officer Steve Timberlake was in charge of the investigation and was kept busy interviewing those involved while also making sure traffic was eventually able to progress without affecting the crash scene.

A passenger in the truck, identified by Meadows as Sandra Proudfoot, was transported to a medical facility from the scene. Meadows said he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Keith Bowling, the son of the owner of the property, Nancy Arnold, arrived at the scene and said the building was in the process of being remodeled.

“I don’t know any details,” Keith Bowling said. “My brother called and said I need to come over here. He was working. So I ran over quickly.”
