Ohio Senator Joe Uecker introduced legislation Monday that, if enacted, would allow active duty military members to carry a concealed handgun without a permit.

“This came about as a result of a constituent issue from another senator who came to me and asked if I could work on the legislation,” Uecker said.

If the legislation would be enacted, active duty military members would be allowed to carry a concealed handgun without a conceal carry permit in Ohio. Active duty members would be required to carry a military ID and certificate showing proper firearms training.

Uecker said the bill was written and included as an amendment in early drafts of the budget bill. The amendment was taken out at the last minute. As a result Uecker and Senator Randy Gardner introduced the matter as a separate bill.

Uecher said this was something that was already in the works, so the situation in Tennessee only played a small part. Uecker said as a result the legislation was introduced a week earlier than planned.

“Yes, this would help recruiters, but it would be up to the Pentagon to make that determination,” Uecker said.

He said if enacted Ohio National Guard Recruiters would carry a handgun as long as it does not violate adjunct general orders.
