Former Portsmouth mayor David Malone has thrown his hat in the ring to run for Scioto County Commissioner again in 2016.

“I just left the (Scioto County) Courthouse and I just took out my petitions,” Malone told the Daily Times in an exclusive interview Wednesday.

Malone is seeking the seat currently held by Doug Coleman. That term is up in 2016 and a new term, the one Malone is running for, will begin Jan. 1, 2017. The primary will be held in March of 2016 and the general election in November of that year.

While petitions are not due to be turned back into the Scioto County Board of Elections until December, Malone says he won’t wait that long.

“I’ll get my required signatures and go ahead and turn them in at least by August or sometime in there,” Malone said.

Malone ran for County Commissioner last year and he considers his run successful, but said he wants to change things up this time.

“I think this year I’ll take a different approach,” Malone said. “I just want to continue to be working in public service and government and do what I can to better our community.”

Malone became mayor of Portsmouth when Jane Murray was recalled at a time when Malone was President of Portsmouth City Council. He served in that capacity until voters decided to change to a city manager form of government. That led to the appointment of Derek Allen as city manager.

Malone is over Kingdom Builders Evangelistic Ministries, Inc.
