Several City Council meetings ago City Clerk Diana Ratliff announced that the new Dollar General Store at 6135 Harding Avenue in Sciotoville had applied for a liquor permit with a hearing set for July 6. Now it looks like that may not become a reality.

“The city contested the permit and that hearing is continued because after some research at the (Scioto County) Board of Elections, it turns out that I believe that precinct is dry and they can’t get a permit, ” Portsmouth City Solicitor John Haas said. “It was voted clear back in the forties, I believe, and through some consolidation of those precincts up there, the area where that Dollar (General) store is located would have been voted dry.”

Haas said the Board of Liquor Control was to review that status.

Dollar General opened in Sciotoville on February 1 of this year and in a report released on Monday it was announced shares of Dollar General Corporation, one of the largest discount retailers in the U.S., soared to a new 52-week high of $79.82 last Friday, before closing trade a notch lower at $79.47, surging roughly 13 percent year-to-date. The company gathered momentum from its strategic initiatives and better-than-expected first-quarter fiscal 2015 results.
