Waneida Dever Barney, 82

Waneida R. (Dever) Barney, 82, of Sandusky, joined her husband, Tom, and heavenly father, Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 1, 2012. She spent her last days on earth at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on Oct. 21, 1929, in Portmouth, Ohio the daughter of the late Floyd Warren and Ida (Gulker) Dever. Waneida married Thomas M. Barney in Nov. of 1949, in Portsmouth, Ohio. They lived together in Portmouth until Tom’s job, with Norfolk Western Railroad Co., was transferred to Sandusky, Ohio in 1968.

Waneida was a homemaker who was extremely dedicated to her family, faith and the community at large. She believed that a person should constantly be active, serving those around them and she lived by this maxim through her acts of volunteering with Reach to Recovery, FRMC (Corporate Health), and AARP tax preparation. As an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she served as a LOGOS worship leader for many years. Waneida also had a passion for music which she exhibited as a substitute organist for various local churches and through activities such as organizing the yearly Sandusky Messiah Sing-a-Long.

Beyond the realm of organized volunteering within her church and community, Waneida took an active role in keeping up with her many loved ones sending a card for seemingly every occasion, as well as, attending every sporting event, band concert, theatre event, graduation, wedding, family vacation, etc. that was humanly possible. Her kindness was not limited to her family; she also sent cards to help the spirits of first year college students from her church. Waneida went far and above for her family crocheting at least one Afghan Blanket for each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She somehow found time for personal hobbies such as gardening, solving crossword puzzles and playing cards (she made sure each member of the family from her children to grandchildren’s spouses were capable of holding their own in Euchre).

Waneida left a strong legacy behind her with children; Samuel (Pam) Barney, Linda (Billy Joe) Dees, Mary Anne (Brian) Baxter, James (Karen) Barney and Laura (Kevin) McGookey; her grandchildren include, Timothy (Susan) Barney, Bradley (Charity Eilerman) Dees, Brian Dees, Elizabeth (Steven) Chudy, Megan (Andre) Clayburn, Michael Baxter, Christopher Baxter, Emma Barney, Sarah, Barney, David (Stephanie) McGookey, Katelyn McGookey and Jonathan McGookey; three great-grandchildren, Evan and Rylee Dees and Brookelynn Chudy; three sisters, Christine Hansen, Jane Ramsey, Alice Roth; a brother, David Dever; as well as, Barbara Barney of Columbus, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Ida Dever; her husband, Thomas M. Barney (1993); a brother, Richard Dever; two sisters, Margaret Hover and Doris Ach.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, from 3-7 p.m. at the David F. Koch Funeral Home, 520 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, Aug. 4, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 214 E. Jefferson Street, Sandusky, Ohio. Rev. V. Ned Bixler officiating. Interment will be in Perkins Cemetery, Sandusky.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 214 E. Jefferson Street, Sandusky, Ohio 44870 or to Stein Hospice Service, Inc., 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
