Patsy Ann Essman Shaffer, 70 of Friendship, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Heartland of Portsmouth.

She was born Sept. 15, 1939, in Portsmouth, to the late John Lawrence and Mary Katherine Marsh Essman. Patsy retired from the finance department of SOMC. She was a member, elder and deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Portsmouth, was a former board member and the first female president of Scioto County Farm Bureau, member and secretary-treasurer for the Eastern Kentucky Rabbit Breeders Association and the Portsmouth Rabbit Breeders Association, 4-H advisor for 14 years and member of the PTO and Booster Club at West Schools.

Along with her parents, Patsy was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Essman; and a sister-in-law, Donna Essman.

Patsy is survived by her husband of 41 years, Carl L. Shaffer who she married on July 7, 1968; a daughter, Nancy and Mark Seger of Marysville; a son, Jason Shaffer of Stout; two grandsons, Garrett and Brady Seger of Marysville; three brothers, Robert and Sue Essman of Otway, George Essman of Portsmouth, and Lewis and Debbie Essman of West Union; and two sisters, Norma Katherine and Paul Euton of McDermott and Mary Caroline and James Longshore of Zanesville.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth, with Stanley Webster officiating, and interment in Scioto Burial Park. Friends may call at the Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and at the church one hour before the funeral on Wednesday.

The family requests that donations be made to the Stephanie Speilman Fund in Patsy’s name.
