Based on the popular YouTube video, “The Pink Glove Dance,” SOMC will be creating a similar production that will focus on breast cancer awareness and highlighting the survivors.
“Two years ago, St. Vincent Hospital (in Portland, Ore.) filmed this little video of different areas of the hospital wearing pink gloves and dancing. It was done to raise breast cancer awareness. It’s crazy, but this little YouTube video ended up getting millions of views. It just went crazy,” said Wendi Waugh, administrative director of cancer services at SOMC.
Last year, the hospital released a sequel to its viral video that showed people wearing pink gloves and dancing at hospitals all across the United States.
“I saw this and I wanted to do something here,” Waugh said. “The last couple of years we’ve done some things in the community to raise breast cancer awareness. I decided that rather than focusing on the hospital, we would kind of dovetail on how the community has been so supportive.”
The SOMC video will be set to the song “Hey Ya!” by Outkast, and will show people around our community, in their own homes and places of business.
“Instead of doing it at the hospital, we’ll go out and film them and do our own Pink Glove Dance,” Waugh said.
Those participating in the video will wear pink gloves supplied by SOMC, and they can compliment with pink attire or attire showing their organization or school’s logo. Among those already confirmed are Century 21, Shawnee State University and the American Cancer Society.
Some people in the video will also be wearing purple gloves.
“Purple is the color of the American Cancer Society. Purple stands for survivorship, so I thought we should raise awareness with pink, but we should spotlight survivors,” Waugh said. “So if Kroger, for instance, has a survivor, then we would give them purple gloves and have everyone else dance around them in pink gloves.”
The other portion of this video is for people to come up with a 10- or 15-second dance, and the SOMC visual media specialist will put the video segments together and overlay the music. Nobody featured in the video has to say a word, if they don’t want to.
All videos will be filmed in the community on Oct. 8. Anyone who would like to participate in the SOMC Pink Glove Dance video is asked to contact Shawn Jordan, administrative director of community relations, at 356-2716 to schedule a time.
