Daniel O. Sand Sr., 75, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at Hill View Retirement Center.

He was born Feb. 10, 1935, in Cincinnati, to the late Ott and Thelma Sand. Dan was a graduate of Portsmouth Central Catholic High School and attended Ohio State University and Ohio University. He worked with his father at the former Sand Sporting Goods. He retired from Mitchellace with 20 years of service and a 30-year owner of Sand Trophy Shop. Dan was member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, the Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus, and the Notre Dame High School Alumni Hall of Fame, past president of Notre Dame High School Board, and past president and secretary for 20 years of Notre Dame Athletic Association. Dan volunteered for 50 years and gave of his time to Notre Dame High School, including filming of the football games for 20 years and working Bingo for 30 years.

Surviving was his wife of 52 years, Christine Multer Sand, whom he married at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Oct. 5, 1957; a son, Daniel (Jane) Sand Jr. of Rosemount; three daughters, Stephanie Sand of Portsmouth, Amy Sand of Portsmouth, and Nancy Russell of Portsmouth; six grandchildren, Jason Fleming, Heather Russell, Michael Russell Jr., Daniel Sand III, Kate Sand, and Emma Sand; and a great-grandchild, Teagan Fleming. He is also survived by three brothers, Michael “Mick” (Marilee) Sand of Canton, Tim (Linda) Sand of Portsmouth, and Pat Sand of Portsmouth.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Scott Sand; and a sister, Kathleen Sand.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portsmouth, with the Rev. Dwayne McNew officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at Melcher Funeral Home in Portsmouth from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday. Recitation of the Rosary will be 8 p.m. Monday at Melcher Funeral Home.
