Much more than a walk around a track, Relay For Life is a time to celebrate those who have battled cancer, remember those lost, and get inspired to fight back.
Scioto County’s Relay For Life begins at 6 p.m. Friday and continues through 11:30 a.m. Saturday. By participating, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight it — all right here in Scioto County.
Those who have shared the same experience find common ground, hope and healing at Relay. By attending, you have the power to continue the American Cancer Society’s progress toward a future where cancer doesn’t take the lives of our friends and family.
Friday evening’s opening ceremony kicks off with a celebration of life and comments from this year’s chairperson, Rosie Williams. Williams is passionate about Relay. “The event this year is a celebration honoring those that have so bravely fought their battle against the various cancer sell intruders and to raise funds for cancer research, education, prevention and patient services,” Williams said.
At 9 p.m., the Luminaria Service takes place. Candles line the track and are left burning throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions.
Every dollar raised will make a difference to people in Scioto County whose lives are touched by cancer. The American Cancer Society has contributed to almost every major discovery in cancer research. Millions of lives have been saved as a result, including people you may know.
The American Cancer Society also continues to exert influence on all levels of government, advocating for stronger policies and enacting legislation that will save lives and conquer cancer. It also offers many programs and services free of charge — made possible through donations from communities like ours.
Donations to activities such as Relay For Life also can give those touched by cancer, answers to their questions and offers places to turn for help in the community.
Take time Friday and Saturday to attend some of the events at Relay For Life. Activities are taking place at the Scioto County Fairgrounds in Lucasville, where dedicated volunteers have put together several events for the public, all while celebrating survivors and caregivers, and remembering loved ones.
Our thanks to the participating teams, volunteers and committee members for all their hard work and dedication.

The lap for the survivors made you cry and be blessed at the same time. When the Luminaria Service began the silent cries for those lost to cancer was heartbreaking. We were blessed to have been able to attend. If you didn't, try hard next year, I promise you will not regret the evening. Thanks again to all, that made this night possible. GOD BLESS YOU..
