The long-awaited SOC All-Star teams for baseball and softball were released Monday with no Earth-shattering surprises when it came to the Player of the Year awards.

The SOC II softball Player of the Year award went to Valley’s young hurler Braiden Dillow while the SOC II baseball Player of the Year nod belonged to Wheelersburg’s Andrew Elliott.

The awards were a fitting cap on amazing seasons by both players.

Dillow and the Lady Indians went 28-2 this season and made it all the way to the regional final.

In that contest against Piketon, Dillow pitched all 17 innings of a four-and-a-half hour contest in high temperatures. Though Valley lost 2-1, Dillow and Piketon pitcher Shella Zimmerman had a pitcher’s duel for the ages. Dillow struck out 20 batters in that contest.

The Pirates season went a few games further, all the way to the state championship in fact.

While Elliott, bound for Wright State next year, had several memorable games this season, he may end up best remembered for a gutsy performance in the state semifinal.

Elliott pitched 10 innings of Wheelersburg’s 12 inning, 8-4 victory that ended in Caleb Leach’s dramatic walk-off grand slam. Elliott struck out nine in that contest. He also pitched in the Pirates’s state title loss.

The SOC I Players of the Year were Notre Dame’s Brock Hannah, who helped the Titans to an 8-4 record in the league this season and Symmes Valley’s Nikki Nance who led the Lady Vikings to an undefeated league record and SOC I championship.

The Coach of the Year awards went to Wheelersburg’s Michael Estep and Valley’s Montie Spriggs in the SOC II and Symmes Valley’s Odie Estep and Chad Renfro in the SOC I.

Each league champion had the majority of selections to first and second team.
