The Wheelersburg community will do the honors of kicking off the Memorial Day weekend with a Saturday morning parade and a ceremony.
The annual Wheelersburg Kiwanis Memorial Day parade will assemble at 10 a.m. at the Wheelersburg Kroger store on Ohio River Road, and will begin at 11 a.m., ending at the Porter Township Community Park. This year’s parade grand marshal will be Everett Williams. Immediately following the parade at noon will be the Memorial Service at the Porter Township Community Park. The Memorial Service guest speaker will be Gregory Emnett, First Vice Commander of the American Legion of Ohio’s Seventh District.
Sunday, the Greenup County War Memorial Committee will have a Memorial Day Celebration at 2 p.m. at the War Memorial Park at Wurtland. Ken Lucas, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, will be the featured speaker. Melanie Sparks, Rev. Jim Coleman and Tony Wilson will provide special music. A new statue recently acquired will be unveiled. Refreshments will be served by the Greenup AMVETS Post 95 following the ceremony.
The remainder of Memorial Day events will be held on Monday, with Portsmouth leading the way.
The Scioto County Memorial Day Association will begin the day’s festivities at 9 a.m. with KIA/MIA services at Tracy Park with Carl E. Davis acting as master of ceremonies. Frank Lewis will be the guest speaker.
At 10 a.m., a procession will leave Tracy Park, travel south on Chillicothe to Gallia — east on Gallia to Offnere — then up Offnere Street to Greenlawn Cemetery for 11:30 a.m. Memorial Day services at Soldier’s Circle, where James R. Saddler will be master of ceremonies and Portsmouth City Solicitor Mike Jones will be speaking.
At 1:30 p.m., the Portsmouth Fire Department will hold their Memorial Day Service at the Central Fire Station, 1529 Gallia St., to honor their fallen firefighters.
At 3 p.m., Sam McKibben will perform the duties of master of ceremonies at the Lost at Sea Service at the Ohio River Court Street Landing at the Lost at Sea Memorial.
The William A. Baker American Legion Post 363 of Lucasville will host a Memorial Day Parade and ceremony Monday. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at the north end of West Street and ends at the Lucasville Cemetery with a ceremony that will feature Paul Crabtree as the speaker.
In Minford, a parade will step off at 11 a.m. on Ohio 139 at the Desco building and travel to Bennett Cemetery where Scott Rawlings of Christ’s Community Church will be the featured speaker.
Memorial Day events get under way at 11 a.m. at South Webster High School for the South Webster Bloom Township Memorial Day Observance.
A parade will leave at 11 a.m. from the school, and a Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the gazebo after the parade. The event will feature an opening prayer offered by Justin Grinstead, songs by April Grinstead, and remarks by Master Sgt. Boreman of the U.S. Army.
A Memorial Day lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the South Webster Bloom Township Fire Station.
