A Scioto County Sheriff’s Deputy returning fire in a potentially life-threatening situation shot a Rosemount man Sunday afternoon.

Orville R. Brown, 84, of 4418 Old Scioto Trail is listed as stable at a Columbus Hospital after being transferred there from Southern Ohio Medical Center.

Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said the Sheriff’s 911 Center received a call of an older man waving a gun at some workers who were trying to blacktop the parking lot of the Lute Supply business in Rosemount.

At about 12:01 p.m. as Sgt. Darren Fike went to the Brown’s residence, Brown reportedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Fike.

“He (Fike) told him to put it down — ‘drop the weapon. Drop the weapon,’” Scioto County Sheriff’s Captain David Hall said. “And as he (Fike) is backing away from the suspect to distance himself from him (Brown), the guy fired shots at Darren.”

That is when Fike apparently returned fire, striking Brown one time.

“It took place in the front yard of his (Brown) residence,” Hall said. “He was up on his front porch, and he came down on a wooden landing, and he points the gun at Darren.”

Hall said several witnesses reported seeing and hearing Fike order Brown to put the weapon down.

Brown was assisted with medical support from officers and EMTs on the scene, then transported to SOMC, and later to Columbus.

“He is stable. He has been taken to a Columbus hospital,” Hall said.

Donini said he has requested the assistance of the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation to conduct an independent investigation, since it was an officer-involved shooting.

Donini also thanked the Portsmouth Police Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol for providing assistance.

Donini said anyone with information about the shooting should contact Detective Paul Blaine at (740) 354-7566. All calls will remain anonymous.
