A Sciotoville man was shot and killed outside his home Wednesday morning after trying to stop a robbery.

According to Portsmouth Police, officers received a call at about 3:21 a.m. Wednesday reporting gunshots heard and yells for help coming from the home of Aaron Lodwick, 25, at 5534 Wilson Ave., in Sciotoville.

Officers responded to the Lodwick residence and found Aaron Lodwick lying on the ground outside with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen.

Witnesses told police that they were inside the house with Aaron when an unknown suspect “slammed open the front door” wearing a mask and dark clothing and yelled at them to get down. The suspect reportedly took something from the home and then left. Portsmouth Police Capt. David Thoroughman said police do not know what was taken from the home, and do not have a detailed description of the suspect.

The witness told police that Lodwick chased after the person, and that’s when the witness heard a gunshot.

Lodwick was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth. He was being airlifted to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, when his condition worsened and the helicopter was forced to return to SOMC.

He died at 6:21 a.m. Wednesday. No further information was available.

An autopsy has been ordered by the Scioto County Coroner, and the Detective Division of the Portsmouth Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to please contact Det. Andy Dawes at (740) 354-1600.

I think that I would have to agree. I knew aaron amd I think that it didn't have anything to do with drugs but like it has been said i don't think that this murder will be solved either. Its another case that nobody will ever know who did it but we will know theres a killer out there. I would have to agree that is my home town but there is nothin left there and thr crime rate doesn't seem to be going down. this makes the second friend that I have losted in 2 weeks. when is it ever gonna end. My mom is gone to. My love goes out to all aaron's close friends and family. I was really good friends with aaron and I bein able to talk to him. RIP AARON and LEFTY. Ur always in my prayers and I know that you will be my gardian angels.

I have to agree with Diamond Eyes, I think the situation here is just beyond control. I'm moving to a big city, where it's safer! It's bizarre the amount of crime here for such a scarcely populated area. And more are moving away every day. Hho can blame us? Crime is bad, schools are bad, medical care is bad, jobs..?..well, they aren't even here to be bad.I honestly believe it is hopeless at this point too.

I live near Harding/Wilson. In the past month we've had a sex offender wanted on Harding, several robberies including one on Wilson last week with guns stolen, and now a murder. My house has had all the plumbing and wiring stolen in the past. I can't let my kids outside, and yesterday was the first time I'd seen a city police car on Wilson! We as a community need help! My husband and I work hard. We deserve to have a safe place for our family!

Well, I guess this will go unsolved...considering who is on the case. Portsmouth's so called finest! That town has no chance of really surviving. If you get sick....you need to leave there, if you need the police...don't bother unless you are a family member of one or an official of that city...if you try to stand up for yourself...well, you apparently die trying! Portsmouth is hopeless now! Good luck to all that live there!!

It does not pay to do the police work chasing the crooks, remember that guy chasing someone messin' with his car or truck outside that bar, was it on 8th. St?

Oh, can't SOMC, treat people they have to go to somewhere else and die on the way, bet there's no investigation on that, but people are dying like that all the time. SOMC or the transporters or both? What authorities care about that? Police, Fire, who? These governments are so privatized that these services are so diluted people fall between the cracks? Just who cares about them? The county A Team? hah.....
