At press time Monday, Christopher Hutchinson was to be on his way back to Portsmouth to face two charges of murder.

“He waived his right to an extradition hearing, and he will be in the Scioto County Jail later today (Monday),” Capt. David Thoroughman of the Portsmouth Police Department said.

Portsmouth Police Detective Sgt. Jim Charles was in Warren County along with another officer to interview Hutchinson, and was expected to bring him back to Scioto County.

Hutchinson was living in Deerfield Township in Warren County when he was taken into custody without incident.

Hutchinson will not be arraigned in Portsmouth Municipal Court.

“That will be in Scioto County Common Pleas Court since it is an indictment warrant,” Thoroughman said. He didn’t know if Hutchinson would be in that court today or at a later date.

Hutchinson, 36, of 1230 Fourth St., Portsmouth was indicted by the Scioto County Grand Jury on Feb. 12, with the indictment filed on Feb. 15.

Hutchinson was arrested by Warren County authorities Friday afternoon in connection with the shooting death of Eugene “Gene” Smallwood, 43, of Greenup, Ky., shortly before 2 a.m. on Oct. 8, 2009, at Hutchinson’s residence.

Hutchinson was questioned the day of the shooting by Portsmouth Police, but was not immediately charged in the shooting.
