As authorities continue to battle the illegal prescription drug trade in the Scioto County area and surrounding communities, two more people have been arrested for trafficking in prescription drugs in the vicinity of a Portsmouth school.

William E. Clay, 30, and Shauna J. McClurg, 27, both of 218 Offnere St., Portsmouth, face charges of trafficking in drugs.

Officers from the Portsmouth Police Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant Friday at the couple’s address, after having made a recent purchase of oxycodone on those premises.

While they were searching, detectives said they located several prescription pill bottles for Clay and McClurg. Officers said McClurg got a prescription for 90 oxycodone 30-milligram tablets on Jan. 12, and a prescription for 60 oxycodone 30-milligram tablets on that same date. That meant a total of 3,000 milligrams of oxycodone being prescribed for one person on one day.

Officers said there were only nine 30-milligram tablets, and 10 5-milligram tablets remaining in the bottles.

Police say the activity was conducted in the school zone of Portsmouth Elementary School.

Two recent town hall meetings have focused on the problem of the illegal sale of prescription drugs.
