Lillian E. Kyser of Kalamazoo, Mich., died Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009.

Lillian was born on Sept. 16, 1919, in New Boston, Ohio, the daughter of Thomas H. and Irene Newberry. In 1939, Lillian received a degree from Rio Grande College. She began teaching first grade in 1940 in Rudolph, Ohio, where she met Dan Kyser. She and Dan were married June 30, 1946, after he returned from serving in the Army. They settled in Ann Arbor, Mich., and later moved to Kalamazoo, Mich., where they lived for more than 50 years. Lillian was an active volunteer, serving as a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. As a church volunteer, she taught Sunday School, served as Sunday school superintendent, and worked as the church archivist. Along with her husband, Dan, she helped with the church rummage sales. She belonged to the United Methodist Women (UMW) and was a member of the Deborah Elizabeth Circle.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; her brothers, Charles, Jesse and Eugene Newberry.

She is survived by two brothers, Tom Newberry and Howard Newberry; sisters-in-law, Alma Powell and Maralyce Newberry; many nieces and nephews. Her surviving children are Lynn Russell (Rick) and Tom Kyser (Jan); grandchildren include Sara Malloure (Jim), John Russell (Jill Zwiers), Shauna Cerin, Ryan Kyser and Aaron Kyser; two great-grandchildren, Lane and Myah.

There will be no visitation. A private inurnment service will be held at the First United Methodist Church Columbarium. A memorial service will be planned for later in 2010.

Memorial contributions for Lillian may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Kalamazoo, Mich.
