Scioto County Sheriff’s deputies were kept busy responding to complaints of vandalism pouring into their offices from West Portsmouth residents Monday.

“They had a bunch of cars damaged last night,” Scioto County Sheriff’s Captain David Hall told the Portsmouth Daily Times around 11:15 a.m. “We haven’t seen all of the reports yet. They are still coming in. The officers are taking the reports right now.”

One of the victims was Dwight Adams of Fifth Street, West Portsmouth.

“The Sheriff’s Office said the whole West Side got hit,” Adams said. “There’s four of them on my street, and one the other day when it was snowing on the same street. They got at least four of us this morning.”

Adams said he and at least three other neighbors had the rear windows and side glass knocked out of their vehicles, and in some cases the driver’s side mirror was knocked off with what he believes was a baseball bat.

“They dented the back of my cab where they knocked the rear window off on my pickup truck,” Adams said. “This happened at about five this morning.”

Adams said four wheelers run up his street up until 1 a.m. some days, and he said he has reported it to authorities. Adams has also had a lawn mower and a weedeater stolen during the summer.

“It’s just out of hand,” Adams said. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

I too have been a victim of vandals within the past few months. I honestly believe that these might be the same people that were vandalizing automobiles here in the Portsmouth area a few months ago. This vandalism stuff is very much out of hand. And what really makes me mad is that this stuff is happening to hard working un-deserving citizens that don't bother anyone else and who are only trying to live their lives to the best of their capabilities. I think more cameras need to go up in more areas, and this time the authorities need to make sure things can be seen on these videos, so that un-like the way my luck went, the vandalism will more than likely be caught on these videos. We all need to work together on getting these vandals caught and prosecuted!!!

I my self living on lincoln st of the west side, I have also contacted the sheriffs DEPT. about the increase of criminal activity and drug related problems on the west side! On my street we have instituted a neighborhood watch program and have exchanged phone numbers and will call our neighbors when we see something out of place! I would suggest the same to all

This seems to relate to a story we ran in the University Chronicle earlier this year about vehicle break-ins on campus and in the downtown area.

http://media.www.ssuchronicle.com/media/storage/paper1252/news/2009/09/16/News/Vehicle.BreakIns.Trigger.Concern-3770009.shtml

This is a problem everywhere, no matter what neighborhood. And the university's parking lots get hit a lot at the beginning of each new semester. What, if anything, is being done to guard against this crime which has, like the man said, gotten out of hand?
