In what has become a season full of exciting finishes for the Redstreaks, the hometown fans were not disappointed Friday as Piketon came from 14-points down with as many minutes to play to notch a 26-20 win over Paint Valley.
"It's huge," Piketon coach Tyler Gullion said. "We've lost some close games this year, but we won one tonight."
Paint Valley returned the opening kickoff of the second half 80 yards for a score, pushing its lead to 20-6 with 11:47 left in the third quarter.
The Streaks, however, were undeterred. Tyler Tackett cut the deficit to 20-12 with a 29-yard run late in the third quarter. The senior back led Piketon with 93 yards on 13 carries.
Neither team could score for the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter, but Piketon was prepared to strike once again, this time on a big pass play.
Junior quarterback Jamie Helton, who split snaps at quarterback with Jordan Miller, found Jared Vulgamore for a 66-yard scoring connection with 3:33 to play. Miller's two-point conversion run evened the score at 20.
That was not all for Piketon, as they punched in a game-winner with 1:15 to play as Caleb Southworth scored on a one-yard run. The senior tight end also caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Miller in the first quarter.
"It was a great comeback by our young men," Gullion said. "The seniors, we challenged them at halftime, and they came out and played with emotion and passion in that second half."
The Streaks will look to continue the magic at home once again next week when Southeastern comes for a visit.
