Fresh of the heels of a state title and long tournament run that nearly sent the 11-12 year old girls to the Little League World Series, the Wheelersburg 9-10 year olds earned a state title of their own.
A 5-4 win over Tallmadge on Thursday sealed the win.
"It's a great feeling to win a state championship," head coach Tom Bergen said.
At the 9-10 year old level, the state title is the pinnacle of success.
Wheelersburg got contributions of some kind from everyone but among the tournament highlights were a two-run home run by Raygan Reyes in the title game, Faith Howard earning wins in all three tournament games and a state-title winning RBI base hit down the right field line by Mackenzie Horton.
Wheelersburg defeated Astabula 11-0 to open the tournament last Sunday and beat Tallmadge 5-4 for the first time on Tuesday.
After Tallmadge battled through the loser's bracket to earn a rematch, Wheelersburg turned in another solid performance to win by the same score as before.
"I just want to say thank you to the parents and the community for giving us the opportunity to represent Wheelersburg...," Bergan said. "Even the district tournament director said these are some of the best games he's seen in 10 to 15 years. I'm in awe of (the girls). We worked hard and practiced everyday."
