Portsmouth Police now say they have solved two more robberies with the arrest by Scioto County Sheriff’s deputies earlier this week of a West Portsmouth man on another robbery charge.

Christopher C. Gillum, 25, of 163 Fourth St., in Friendship, arrested after the robbery of the West Portsmouth IGA grocery store Sunday, will now be charged with the earlier robberies of the Bridge Carry-out on Second Street and the Family Dollar Store on 11th Street in Portsmouth.

“We received a call Monday morning from the sheriff’s office,” Portsmouth Police Detective Andy Dawes said. “They advised us this guy, Chris Gillum, may also be responsible for the robberies we had had.”

Officers went to the Scioto County Correction Center and interviewed Gillum, “and he admitted to robbing the Bridge Carry-out, and he admitted to robbing Family Dollar.”

“We’re not going to arrest him there, because he’s already in the county jail for the county’s robbery — and I believe there are charges pending against him in Greenup County for complicity to commit robbery. We’re going to take it directly to the grand jury.”

In light of solving several recent robberies, Dawes handed out some more “thanks.”

“We want to thank all of the readers (of the Portsmouth Daily Times). We’ve had several tips coming in since the Times ran our story,” Dawes said, adding that officers are still investigating a Crispie Creme robbery, and following up on some leads related to that case as well.

Within minutes of the Sunday morning robbery of the West Side IGA, Gillum was in custody.

“Someone got the tag number off the car when he was taking off very fast,” Scioto County Sheriff’s Captain David Hall said. “Officers were able to get over there pretty quick and attempted to arrest him. He took off, and they chased him for a block and they got him.”

Gillum was arrested and incarcerated in the Scioto County Corrections Center, appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court Monday morning, and had his next court date set for July 17. He was jailed under $20,000 bond.
