The Fourth of July is traditionally a memorable time for families, usually involving some kind of cookout or family gathering, and many area residents enjoy the tradition of fireworks by lighting some in their own back yard.

We’d like to take time to remind everyone that only certain kinds of fireworks are permitted at private residences in Ohio. These include smoking, sparkling, snapping and snaking kinds, and these still must be handled with great care. Adult supervision is to be expected when handling fireworks of any kind, and the hazards are still very real with anything that can be lit or issue any kind of discharge of smoke, substance or energy.

Did you know that a simple sparkler wire can reach a temperature of 1,800 degrees? Never let a child hold a sparkler unsupervised, and make certain that everyone, young and old, knows how hot one can get and uses appropriate caution.

One confusing thing about state law is that some fireworks can be sold in Ohio that are not permitted to be used in the state. Firecrackers and bottle rockets can be legally purchased by people at least 18 years old, but the purchaser must agree to take them out of state to set them off.

Illegal possession or discharge of fireworks can result in a $1,000 fine and up to six months imprisonment for first-time offenders.

Fireworks displays at public venues such as those hosted by municipalities and licensed exhibitors are still the best, most enjoyable and safest option for families. The "Ribs on the River" gets under way at 4 p.m. at Second and Court streets, with many recreational activities, and the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra will hold the annual Fourth of July concert in Tracy Park at 6 p.m. The evening will conclude along the riverfront with fireworks sponsored by the Civic Forum.

We encourage you to come to the downtown area Saturday and enjoy the festivities in a safe, fun environment without the hazards that handling fireworks can bring.
