A frequent sponsored ad read over the public address system at Portsmouth Raceway Park states the the Limited Late Model cars have unlimited potential.

PRP's Limited Late class lived up to that statement Saturday night during the Premiere Precast Limited Late Model Extravaganza.

Coal Grove's John Melvin, the defending PRP champion in the featured class, managed to hold off a hard driving Evyian Terry in the A-main to set up an interesting bonus race. Melvin earned $600 for his win.

Racing for $250 in the bonus event, the entire field of Limited Late Models was inverted to put Melvin and Terry near the back. The inversion race was a five-lap shootout with Jeff Stevens taking the checkered flag.

While John Melvin took the win, his son Matt Melvin finished just behind in third place. The elder Melvin said competing with his son makes for some interesting dinner table conversation.

"Oh yeah it's real interesting," he said. "The bad thing is he used to take care of my car and do all the work. Now he's taking care of his and I'm not getting any work out of him."

In the Late Models, Indiana's Steve Casebolt, who is currently seventh in the Lucas Oil points standings, took the checkered flag in a personal tune up. Casebolt and the Lucas Oil Series will make their way to PRP Sept. 5.

Early in the Late Model A-main R.J. Conley and Nick Bocook paced the field but by lap seven, Rick Combs was out in front. Combs led 11 laps before Casebolt took over for good by running on the high groove while Combs hugged the tires.

"I really didn't think that we could outrun Combs in the 11 car," Casebolt said. "I knew we were good on restarts but then the track had dirtied back up and got the crumblies all across it. The leader kind of helped me a little bit because he packed my line. I'm not sure if he knew that or not."

Casebolt, who is from Indiana, said he is found of Scioto County's only dirt race track.

"I had to fill out a questionnaire the other day and it asked me what my favorite track was." he said. "I thought about it for a minute and said 'You know I think PRP is my favorite place.' We like to come here as much as we can but unfortunately I think it's just going to be one more time this season."

Casebolt wasn't the only Indiana driver to take a checkered flag on Saturday. Columbus, Indiana's Devin Gilpin managed to hold of Doug Adkins in the Modified feature.

The modified race saw two cautions before one lap was even registered. Those cautions allowed Adam Jordan and Adkins to move into the front row. The cautions also sent Gilpin to the tail.

Jordan led the first six laps and then traded the lead with Adkins. Jordan regained the lead but spun out on lap 14 and Gilpin had gone from worst to first to hold on for the win.

Gilpin, a recent high school graduate, had never raced at PRP.

"This is my first time ever here," Gilpins said. "My engine builder lives just 20 miles up the road, Mike Shell. I got to give him a big thanks for the great engines he builds me.

Gilpin is expected to return on July 18 for PRP's "Mod Squad Spectacular" event that will pay $5,000 to the winner.

"More than likely since I came here and got the win we'll be back to try and pick up five grand." Gilpin said."

There were few if any surprises in the Bomber division as Jeremie Bretz took the win followed by Justin Jaynes. Chris Maynard finished third.

Next weekend, the Fourth of July, PRP will host the Pepsi 75. The race will be a Mid-Atlantic Championship Series race with $10,000 going to the late model feature winner.

Many big name drivers are expected to attend. Certain to be one big name among several, 2008 MACS champion Jason Covert's website states that he will be participating.
