Madison trustees change meeting

The Madison Township Trustees have changed their July meeting date. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. July 14 at the township hall on White Gravel Road at which time a public hearing will be held on the budget, prepared by the trustees of Madison Township, for the ensuing fiscal year.

Nominations are open

The Ohio Department of Development’s Division of Entrepreneurship and Small Business, U.S. Small Business Administration, and Small Business Development Centers of Ohio are now accepting nominations for the 2009 Ohio Keys to Success Awards, which recognize the accomplishments and economic contributions of successful Ohio women business owners.

“The Department is proud to once again recognize Ohio’s businesswomen who have played an important role in the economic growth and vibrancy of our state,” said Lisa Patt-McDaniel, Interim Director of the Ohio Department of Development. “We encourage community and business leaders to nominate women in business for their commitment to their respective industries and to accelerating Ohio’s economy.”

Keys to Success Award winners will be selected based on nomination forms received. Awards will be selected in nine categories: Manufacturing/Technology; Service; Wholesale/Retail; Real Estate/Construction; Healthcare/Medical; Marketing/Advertising/Public Relations; Social Entrepreneur; Youth Entrepreneur; and Rising Star (in business less than five years).

Potential recipients must be female majority owners of companies with annual revenues in excess of $250,000, except in the Service category (minimum $200,000 in annual revenue) and Rising Star category (minimum $150,000 in annual revenue). Social and youth entrepreneurs are not required to provide annual revenue.

Additional criteria, past recipients, and nomination forms are available online at or by calling (800) 848-1300, ext. 6-2711. Nomination packages must be submitted by Aug. 31 and an awards ceremony will take place Nov. 19 at the Vern Riffe Center in Columbus.

Green sets registration

Green Elementary will hold summer registration from 9 a.m. to noon June 30. Bring the following documentation to complete the registration process:

• Kindergarten and preschool — Original birth certificate, proof of residence, immunization record, custody papers (if applicable), Social Security card.

Preschool only — Income verification (most recent W-2 preferable).

South Shore Police make drug arrest

South Shore, Ky., Police, along with the Greenup County Sheriff’s Department, arrested Elvis Aaron Richards, 27, of Portsmouth, during a routine traffic stop June 18 in South Shore.

According to a police report, Richards was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia, wanton endangerment of a minor, concealed deadly weapons, and other traffic offenses.

Richards is being held in the Greenup County Detention Center and a female juvenile was taken to the Boyd County Juvenile Detention Center after being charged with possession of marijuana, public intoxication and wanton endangerment of an infant. Subjects had a 5-month-old infant in the rear seat of the vehicle at the time of the traffic stop, the report stated. The juvenile is the mother of the child.

House Fire Reported

South Shore Fire Department members were dispatched at 1:19 a.m. Monday to a fully involved structure fire on property owned by John Huffman, 169 Underwood Lane, South Portsmouth, Ky.

The house was a total loss and the fire was under control by 3:30 a.m., a fire department spokesman reported. Three trucks and 13 men from the South Shore department and one truck and six men from Firebrick were on the scene. The fire is under investigation by the Kentucky State Police Fire Investigator, the department reported.
