On a Saturday night meant to feature the rich history of racing in the area, the fans got exactly what they came for at Portsmouth Raceway Park as all five A-main races featured first-time winners for 2009.

Mike Mason of Wilmington led the pack of vintage race cars to win a special feature including everything from 1930s stock cars to a super modified to sprint cars to his own midget vehicle in the only race that ended the way people may have expected.

The PRP points leaders heading into the weekend were the usual suspects to find their way to the winner’s circle but when it was over, no previous winners finished in first place and the top position in the modified division switched hands.

The modified feature including an exciting opening stretch as Adam Jordan battled Doug Adkins for the lead with Adkins holding on for a while. Just as Jordan took the high line and tried to pass for the lead on lap No. 8, Adkins was forced to retire for what appeared to be a flat tire.

Jordan hung on to win, overtaking Adkins to become the points leader after four races. According to Jordan, he has no intention of giving the points lead up.

“Last year we missed a race but I don’t think I’ll miss one this year,” he said. “This is probably my last big hurrah. Hopefully we’ll win the points and I can get behind my son the rest of the time.”

The Late Model heat saw points leader Jackie Boggs get tangled up with Josh Bocook on the first lap causing both cars to retire.

The rest of the race was a two-way battle for the top with R.J. Conley and Wayne Chinn, with Conley taking the checkered flag. Audie Swartz finished third.

Evyian Terry followed three-straight second-place finishes this season with a win Saturday in the Limited Lates. Terry held off defending champion John Melvin for the win.

“One out of four ain’t bad,” he said, dedicating the race to his father and grandparents. “I’ve finished second in points three times. I think it’s time to win one.”

Joe McGinnis came into the weekend sixth in PRP points in the Bomber division but led from the pole to the checkered flag on Saturday. McGinnis’ victory shocked even himself, considering how well Jeremie Bretz had been running. Bretz finished second.

“I tell you what, I’m truly shocked,” he said. “We worked a lot on this car last week. I guess it paid off.”

Next week PRP will feature its Limited Late Model Extravaganza.
