When sponsors offer higher than usual pay outs, every driver in the pits races that much harder.
No amount of money, however, can provide the motivation of trying to do right by a brother.
Doug "The Buzzard" Adkins of West Portsmouth, whose brother Rocky died of cancer Thursday, picked up the Modified A-Main feature win Saturday at Portsmouth Raceway Park. The win netted Adkins $1,100 dollars as part of the Mustain Muffler blowout Modified show.
Adkins, a two-time PRP track champion with 78 career feature wins, has faced all kinds of challenges on the track during his 16-year racing career, but Saturday included the challenge of racing while grieving.
"That's all I was thinking about today," Adkins said. "(Friday) we didn't race and then I wanted to just sit at the house and I couldn't stand it, so tonight (Saturday) I had to come here. There's no place to come that's better than here because that's what my brother would have wanted me to do. It's just an awesome feeling to be able to come here and to win for that."
Adkins has won all three Modified features at PRP this season to lead the points standings, though he did face some challenge from second-place finisher Adam Jordan Saturday. Todd Robinson finished third.
The defending Late Model track champion Jackie Boggs of Grayson, Ky. led from start to finish in the Late Model feature, sometimes opening up huge leads between himself and the field. R.J. Conley did challenge Boggs on restarts but was unable to close the gap in the second half of the race.
A restart on lap five provided one of the most exciting moments of the night when four cars got tangled up coming out of turn four. Josh Bocook, Audie Swartz and David Smith's cars were all incapacitated from the wreck that actually sent Bocook into the retaining fence on a flip. Brett Kennard's car was also damaged in the wreck. All drivers were O.K.
In the Limited Late division, defending champion John Melvin was forced to go pit side as a result of steering problems allowing Adam Colley to hold off Evyian Terry for the win. It was his first win in a Limited Late A-main. Mustain Muffler provided $1,000 to the Limited Late winner.
In the Bombers Jeremie Bretz won his third straight race.
