The Portsmouth High School Football Mothers Club is presenting a roast of Portsmouth head football coach Curt Clifford.
The Curt Clifford Roast will be Saturday, May 9 at James Dickey American Legion Post 23.
Basically what the proceeds will go to is the annual football banquet and Gatorade and food during three-a-day practices. We also do scrapbooks for all the seniors, Mothers Club co-president Barb Gibson said.
Gibson and fellow member Robin Hammond were the ones who came up with the idea for a roast.
We thought of (a roast) as a fundraiser, just so we could avoid doing concessions, Gibson said. We thought we could make more money if we had a roast. (Clifford) was all for it, because he knew it was for the boys.
Roasts have become popular over the past couple years with celebrities, Courtney Clifford, Coach Cliffords daughter said. You watch them on TV and see how their friends and colleagues will say funny stuff and call them out. With Coach Clifford being popular within the community there a lot of people who will probably enjoy something like this.
Roasters will include: Portsmouth assistant football coach Chuck Burke, Curts brother Doug Clifford, Valley head football coach Darren Crabtree, Mark Noel, Jim Rhea, Rick Estep, former coach and local sportscaster Jim Snuffy Smith and former player under Clifford, Case Kegley.
The PHS Football Mothers Club became a key supporter of the football team around the time Coach Clifford was a player for the Trojans, with Cliffords mother being an active member.
I want to reiterate what a good organization the Mothers Club is, PHS cheerleading advisor Tiffany Newsome said. They do a lot. They make sure the cheerleaders get included and they do a lot for the football players from the first day of practice all the way to the banquet. They deserve a lot of credit. Its about the kids. Its not about the roasters. Its not about Curt. Its about the kids who are going to strap on those pads and play in that brand new facility down there.
