It’s time once again for what I consider one of the most futile attempts to get elected to any public office.

It’s time for the unsightly “battle of the yard signs.”

As I have written in the past, I cannot understand the benefits of yard signs. If they were effective wouldn’t your opponent’s sign in the yard next door be more effective because it is the last one the driver passed?

What in the world can you learn from a sign designed with attractive colors and short meaningless words? How many signs across America every year read — “Elect Smith Mayor — experienced — energetic — dedicated.” What does all of that mean? The truth is that it means nothing.

For the rest of this story, as well as other local news and events, refer to either the printed copy of today's Portsmouth Daily Times, or try the "E-edition," and enjoy the entire copy from cover to cover electronically. It's a pdf (an electronic file) you can download and keep for only 25 cents a day! Click on "E-edition" at the top of the home page to learn more.
